"But satisfaction brought it back, right?" "Just remember, curiosity killed the cat."ĭuke cracked a smile. "Don't ask me about my hometown, by the way." Don't really need to anymore." Snake glanced over at him. If you want to steal from a restaurant, fancy places are fair game no matter how friendly they are." "It goes something like, if a diner is friendly to you, don't steal from them. "Almost thought we were going to eat and run there," Duke commented as they got back on their motorcycles. They left some paper money on the table as their payment and tip. Duke figured the conversation was over and refocused on his own meal. "I told you that when you lost your memories, but it wasn't the full truth."ĭuke tilted his head. Calling me your boss." Snake looked down at his plate and picked at his food. "Good thing I've got my boss to show me around, huh?" Shame you don't remember it, now."ĭuke swallowed his mouthful and cracked a smile. Duke thanked the waitress and dug in as soon as she was gone. I was a cop, yeah, but did I come from this city? Was I transferred from somewhere else?" Duke shrugged. "I know, but you've gotta know something. "I already said you weren't open about it." Wait, no, that was Shirley Keeper, sitting with a coffee and some fish 'n chips. He didn't see any familiar faces, or much of anyone at all this time of night. Plenty of showdowns happen here, but we try to keep it on the down low, out of respect to this place not calling the cops on us."ĭuke hummed and looked around again. So, is this diner sort of like, a neutral ground?" ![]() "You look like you're going through some sort of internal struggle." Fendrich was a criminal? Snake wouldn't have reason to lie about that, would he? It was a bold claim to make if it wasn't true, but Duke had never heard of Fendrich doing anything illegal on all his time on the force. He said it so casually, unaware of Duke's entire world being upended. I mean, they work for him–dunno how much of the cow they're getting, but they seem to enjoy it well enough." "You remember Hacksaw and Betty, right? They're part of it. "Yeah, he runs a whole crime empire." Snake leaned back in his seat. I see Fendrich's crew here all the time."ĭuke blinked. "This diner is pretty friendly to us crooks. "Or, if they do, I'm surprised they let us eat here." "I'm surprised they don't recognize us," Duke said. "I know, right? He's been all over the news! I never heard of him before he started stealing stuff, but I guess he's a big deal?" She glanced back at her screen. "You look kind of like Duke Detain."ĭuke kept a smile plastered on his face. Better be safe than sorry."īefore the heist, they went to the diner. Fendrich has cameras, and I don't know who sees 'em. We should have a clear shot at what we want."ĭuke picked up the slip and looked over the codes. "Fendrich Tower, to be specific." Snake slid a paper over to him. "We're breaking into a tower?" The prospect excited him even if he was a crook, it was impressive to sneak all the way into a tower, right? "So we're breaking into someone's house?" Today's a Sunday, so the banks aren't open–those rich folk haven't had the chance to put their valuables in their deposit boxes yet." "I know you're nervous," Snake said, "so I'll do the stealing while you keep watch." Maybe Duke could pull an alarm while they were in the building. Snake was constantly at his side what was Duke going to do, sneak into a phone booth? He struggled to figure it out as they went over the plan. He still needed to figure out how to contact the police. "Don't worry, partner, I've got your back."ĭuke nodded. "It's, ah, more complicated than that," he said, "but I get it. I mean, I impersonated a police officer! I don't know for sure, but that feels pretty serious." "I mean, not that I don't want to go on a heist," he said quickly, "but if we're caught, we'll both be in big trouble. "Who is the Dirty Duke you know?" Duke said without thinking.ĭuke panicked. ![]() "What, you nervous? That's not the Dirty Duke I know!" ![]() Snake laughed and clapped him on the back. "You sure?" he said, trying to sound casual. ![]() Let's pull off another heist."ĭuke's heart jumped. Duke's head was feeling a lot better the next morning, and he informed Snake as much.
